Veteran Nollywood Actor Taiwo Hassan ‘Ogogo’ Dies at 66, To Be Buried Today in Ilaro

Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66. The respected Yoruba film actor passed away at about 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after battling stage-four cancer. His death was announced by veteran actor Jide Kosoko and has triggered tributes across Nigeria's entertainment industry.

Ogogo to Be Buried in Ilaro

Taiwo Hassan is being buried today, Monday, August 24, in his hometown of Ilaro, Ogun State, in accordance with Islamic rites.

According to the burial arrangements announced by Jide Kosoko, a lying-in-state ceremony was scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the Pavilion in Ilaro. The Ilaro Muslim Community separately announced funeral prayers at the Asade Agunloye Pavilion Ground at 10:00 a.m.

Reports on Monday confirmed that Ogogo's remains had arrived in Ilaro, with family members, residents and colleagues gathering to pay their final respects. Veteran actors Yinka Quadri and Jide Kosoko, among others, were reported to have arrived for the burial.


Family Had Appealed for Medical Assistance

Ogogo's death came only days after his family disclosed that he was battling stage-four cancer and appealed for assistance with his medical treatment.

The disclosure generated concern and support from colleagues, friends and fans within the Nigerian entertainment community.

Ogun Government Mourns Cultural Icon

The Ogun State Government has described Ogogo's death as a major loss to the state, Nigeria's creative industry and the country.

In a statement attributed to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, the government described Hassan as a distinguished cultural ambassador whose career contributed significantly to the growth of Nigeria's entertainment industry and the international projection of Yoruba culture.

The government also highlighted his contribution to theatre, film and television, particularly his role in promoting the Yoruba language, traditions and cultural values.

As an Ilaro-born son of Ogun State, Ogogo was described as a proud representative of his community whose artistic career earned him admiration from colleagues, audiences and generations of Nigerians.

           

A Lasting Legacy in Yoruba Cinema

Taiwo Hassan was one of the prominent figures in Nigeria's Yoruba-language film industry, with a career spanning several decades as an actor, filmmaker and director. Reports following his death have highlighted his contribution to Yoruba cinema and the preservation and promotion of Nigerian cultural expression.

His passing leaves a significant void in the Yoruba film community, with tributes continuing to come from fellow actors, government officials, fans and cultural stakeholders.
