Tinubu Charges Religious Leaders to Condemn Terrorism, Banditry and Misuse of Religion

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on religious and spiritual leaders across Africa and beyond to take a stronger stand against terrorism, kidnapping, banditry and the misuse of religion to justify violence.

The President made the call in a goodwill message delivered on his behalf by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, at the Grand Maulud of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tijani in Kano on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

Tinubu Seeks Stronger Role for Religious Institutions

President Tinubu said religious leaders have an important responsibility to confront violence, extremism and the manipulation of faith for destructive purposes.

He urged religious institutions and their networks to strengthen peace education, religious literacy, scholarship and moral development among young people, while using their influence to promote justice, compassion, responsibility and peaceful resolution of grievances.

The President stressed that legitimate grievances should not be used as justification for lawlessness or violence, adding that religious teachings should continue to uphold the sanctity of innocent human life.



Tijjaniyya Networks Can Support Peacebuilding

Tinubu also called for greater collaboration between government and faith-based organisations, particularly the Tijjaniyya Muslim community, in tackling insecurity and promoting peace.

The President noted that the Tijjaniyya Order's extensive presence across Nigeria, West Africa and the wider region could provide an important platform for community engagement, reconciliation, peacebuilding and preventing radicalisation.

The call comes amid continuing security challenges involving terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime in parts of Nigeria and the wider Sahel region.

In his message, Tinubu noted that societies around the world are facing conflicts, uncertainty, violent extremism, terrorism, transnational crime and the manipulation of religious and ethnic identities.

He therefore encouraged religious leaders to use their considerable influence to help build communities that value tolerance, peaceful coexistence and responsible citizenship.

The President also expressed appreciation to the Supreme Council of the Tijjaniyya, Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation, Kano State Government, traditional rulers, scholars, security and emergency services, organisers and volunteers involved in the Maulud gathering.
