Nigeria–UAE Aviation Partnership Gets Boost as Etihad Plans Daily Abu Dhabi–Lagos Service

Nigeria and the United Arab Emirates are set to deepen cooperation in aviation following discussions between Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, and officials of Etihad Airways in Abu Dhabi.

The engagement focused on the final steps towards the commencement of Etihad Airways' daily Abu Dhabi–Lagos service, scheduled to begin on March 18, 2027.

The development is expected to strengthen air connectivity between Nigeria and the UAE while creating opportunities for increased cooperation in aviation investment, training, technology and cargo transportation.

Etihad Daily Lagos Service

During the engagement in Abu Dhabi, Minister Keyamo discussed with Etihad Airways the preparations required for the airline's planned daily service between Abu Dhabi and Lagos.

The new service is expected to provide passengers with greater travel options between Nigeria and the UAE and potentially improve connections between Lagos and other destinations accessible through Abu Dhabi.

The discussions also explored broader opportunities for cooperation beyond passenger connectivity, particularly in aviation investment, professional training, technology development and cargo operations.

Focus on Aviation Training and Capacity Building



As part of his visit, Keyamo also visited Etihad Aviation Training, where he explored opportunities for capacity building and professional development within Nigeria's aviation sector.

The visit provided an opportunity to examine Abu Dhabi's aviation training ecosystem and learn from its approach to developing aviation professionals and technical capabilities.

The minister also visited Zayed International Airport to gain insights into the airport's operations and wider aviation infrastructure.

Strengthening Nigeria–UAE Aviation Relations

The engagements form part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria's aviation relationship with the UAE and leverage international partnerships to improve the country's aviation sector.

The Federal Government's discussions with Etihad are focused on areas that could contribute to the development of Nigeria's aviation ecosystem, including:

  • International air connectivity
  • Aviation investment
  • Professional training and capacity building
  • Technology transfer
  • Cargo and logistics development
  • Knowledge sharing and industry collaboration

The planned daily Abu Dhabi–Lagos operation is therefore being positioned as more than an additional international flight connection, with the wider engagement aimed at expanding cooperation across different areas of aviation.
