Trump Commends Tinubu Over Anti-Terrorism Efforts, Reaffirms U.S. Nigeria Security Partnership

ABUJA, Nigeria United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as decisive leadership in Nigeria's fight against terrorism, while reaffirming Washington's commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Africa's most populous nation.

The commendation was contained in a letter dated July 6, 2026, the contents of which were released by the Presidency through the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Trump Applauds Tinubu's Leadership

In the letter, President Trump acknowledged Tinubu's efforts to confront terrorism and violent extremism, particularly attacks affecting Christian communities in parts of Nigeria.

According to the letter released by the Presidency, Trump expressed appreciation for Tinubu's leadership and pledged continued U.S. support in combating terrorism.

"I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people... It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous," the letter stated.

           

Stronger Nigeria-U.S. Defence Cooperation

The letter also highlighted the growing defence partnership between Nigeria and the United States.

Trump described the U.S.–Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap as an important framework for expanding collaboration in:

  • Counter-terrorism operations
  • Military training
  • Intelligence sharing
  • Security capacity building
  • Regional stability across West Africa

The U.S. President noted that American Special Operations Forces have been deployed to help train and equip Nigerian military personnel with advanced operational skills and intelligence capabilities needed to confront terrorist groups.

Presidency Highlights Security Collaboration

According to the Presidency, Nigeria and the United States have strengthened their security relationship through a Joint Working Group coordinated by the National Security Advisers of both countries.

The partnership reportedly focuses on:

  • Joint intelligence operations
  • Counter-terrorism planning
  • Military cooperation
  • Capacity development for Nigerian security agencies

The Presidency also stated that the collaboration contributed to a military operation carried out on May 16, 2026, targeting suspected Islamic State-linked terrorists in the Lake Chad region. The operation reportedly resulted in the killing of terrorist commander Abubakar Al-Minoki and several of his associates.

Renewed Diplomatic Engagement

The Presidency further disclosed that recent diplomatic engagements include the visit of U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, to Abuja, where discussions focused on expanding cooperation in security and other areas of mutual interest.

The public release of Trump's letter signals continued security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States as both countries seek to address terrorism and violent extremism in Nigeria and the wider West African region.

While the Presidency presented the letter as evidence of growing international support for Nigeria's security efforts, the broader effectiveness of ongoing counter-terrorism operations will continue to be assessed by developments on the ground.
