FG Accelerates Local Production of Rapid Diagnostic Test Kits to Strengthen Nigeria's Healthcare System

Abuja, Nigeria – The Federal Government has intensified efforts to boost Nigeria's healthcare manufacturing sector by accelerating the local production of Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits, a move aimed at improving access to affordable medical diagnostics, reducing dependence on imported healthcare products, and strengthening the country's health security.

The initiative forms part of the Federal Government's broader healthcare reform agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises local manufacturing, healthcare innovation, and sustainable industrial development.

Government Reviews Progress on Local Manufacturing Project

At a high-level strategic review meeting held in Abuja, the Honourable Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, chaired discussions involving key stakeholders responsible for implementing the project.

The meeting brought together representatives from:

• Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare
• Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC)
• National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI)
• Troment Biotechnology Limited

Participants reviewed progress made towards establishing a local manufacturing facility dedicated to producing Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits and other In-Vitro Diagnostic (IVD) products for priority diseases affecting Nigerians.

Focus on Affordable Diagnostic Kits

According to the Ministry, the proposed manufacturing facility will initially produce diagnostic kits for several major public health concerns, including:

• Malaria
• Tuberculosis (TB)
• Other priority infectious diseases

The project is expected to increase the availability of affordable, high-quality diagnostic tools within Nigeria while reducing delays associated with imported medical supplies.

Government Moves to Remove Implementation Bottlenecks

During the meeting, stakeholders assessed implementation milestones, identified outstanding legal and administrative issues, and agreed on measures to fast-track the commencement of production.

To accelerate implementation, Prof. Pate directed the immediate processing of the Advance Purchase Guarantee (APG) Agreement, a financing mechanism designed to support local manufacturers through guaranteed government procurement.

He also instructed the Ministry's legal and technical teams to collaborate closely with:

• Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation
• NASENI
• Troment Biotechnology Limited

to conclude all pending legal documentation and administrative requirements.

The Minister further ordered regular implementation review meetings to ensure the project remains on schedule.

Speaking during the meeting, Prof. Pate stressed that Nigeria's investment in domestic production of healthcare commodities extends beyond economic development.

According to him:

"Local manufacturing of diagnostics is not just an economic priority; it is a health security imperative. We are removing every bottleneck to accelerate production and deliver affordable test kits to Nigerians."

He explained that increasing local production capacity will enable Nigeria to respond more effectively during disease outbreaks while reducing the country's dependence on imported medical diagnostics.

The Rapid Diagnostic Test initiative forms part of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), one of the Federal Government's flagship reform programmes designed to transform Nigeria into a regional healthcare manufacturing hub.

The programme focuses on strengthening local production across several critical healthcare sectors, including:

• Other essential healthcare commodities

Officials say the initiative is also intended to attract private-sector investment, encourage innovation and improve the availability of quality healthcare products for Nigerians.
