World Environment Day: Iru-Victoria Island LCDA Boss Champions Green Initiative, Orders Canal Clean-Up

The Executive Chairman of Iru-Victoria Island Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Hon. Aminat Oluwakemi Alabi, has reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability with a series of activities to commemorate the 2025 World Environment Day. The event featured a tree-planting campaign and environmental awareness drive designed to encourage responsible environmental practices among residents while promoting the importance of preserving natural ecosystems. The exercise, coordinated by the Department of Environmental Health Services under the leadership of Sanitarian Mayowa Aminu and supported by the Supervisor for Environment, Hon. Adetimi Durojaiye, brought together council officials, National Youth Service Corps members, pupils, and community stakeholders. Pupils from Federal Housing Estate Nursery and Primary School, Awoyaya Nursery and Primary School, and Ansar-Ud-Deen Nursery and Primary School actively participated in the initiative, planting trees and learning about the role of environmental stewardship in creating healthier communities. Addressing participants during the exercise, Hon. Alabi stressed the significance of tree planting as a practical response to climate change, environmental degradation, and declining green spaces. She urged young people to become ambassadors of environmental protection by embracing habits that promote cleanliness and sustainability. The council chairman also engaged teachers and school administrators in discussions on educational infrastructure, taking note of concerns relating to facility upgrades and renovation needs within the schools visited. In a related development, Hon. Alabi conducted an inspection of a drainage channel connected to Kasumu Ekemode Street. During the visit, large volumes of refuse and debris were discovered obstructing the canal. The waste materials were immediately removed and transported by a compactor truck as part of efforts to restore the free flow of water and prevent flooding. Council officials disclosed that additional measures would be introduced to discourage indiscriminate waste disposal and ensure continuous maintenance of drainage infrastructure across the LCDA. Participants at the event commended the chairman for demonstrating proactive leadership in environmental management, describing the initiative as a valuable step towards fostering a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally conscious society. The programme aligns with the environmental and public health objectives of the council’s ACHIEVES Agenda, which places emphasis on sustainable development, sanitation, and the overall well-being of residents. Among dignitaries present were the Vice Chairman, Hon. Prince Murisiku Ajasa; the Leader of the House, Hon. Joel Arowosegbe; the Chief of Staff, Hon. Taofeek Afolabi; the Supervisor for Education, Hon. Lisboa Femi; Supervisors, Special Advisers, management staff, and other prominent guests.
