Peter Obi: "No Reason To Keep (IPOB) Leader Nnamdi Kanu in Detention".

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is currently serving a life sentence. He was convicted on seven terrorism-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja and is presently remanded at the Sokoto Correctional Centre.

He received life imprisonment on counts one, four, five, and six, along with a 20-year and a 5-year sentence on other counts. The judge ordered that he be held in a secure facility monitored by the Office of the National Security Adviser, without digital device access.

IPOB is a Nigerian separatist movement founded in 2012, which advocates for the restoration of an independent state of Biafra.

Peter Obi, has reiterated his call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, saying there is no justification for the continued detention of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra. Obi stated this during an interaction with Nigerians in Washington, D.C., United States, "No reason whatsoever" for the continuous incarceration of IPOB leader.
“I said it repeatedly that there’s no reason for keeping Nnamdi Kanu. As far as I’m concerned, there’s no reason, no reason whatsoever.

“You cannot arrest somebody because he was speaking on the radio or calling people’s names. It doesn’t make sense,” he said.

“I will consult with them. Because I believe that they have a reason for whatever they want to do. It’s only by engaging them that we’ll learn and see how we can solve it. But I am not in a position to do anything today,” Obi added.

If I’m in government today, I will discuss with them. I will engage with them. he would adopt dialogue in addressing agitations across the country if given the opportunity to lead. “Even all agitators.
