Nigeria's Health Insurance Enrolment Hits 22 Million as Health Sector Records Major Reforms

Nigeria's health sector has recorded significant progress under the Federal Government's ongoing reform programme, with health insurance enrolment rising from 16 million to 22 million Nigerians over the past three years.

The achievements were announced by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, following the 15th Expanded Ministerial Oversight Committee meeting on the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) in Abuja.

According to the minister, Nigeria's health system is now ranked 4th in Africa, behind South Africa, Tunisia and Kenya, reflecting improvements driven by the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (NHSRII).

Prof. Pate revealed that of the ₦339 billion disbursed through the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund since its establishment, ₦235 billion—nearly 70%—was released within the last three years, enabling major investments in primary healthcare across the country.

The funding has supported over 8,000 Primary Healthcare Centres, expanded emergency medical services, strengthened disease surveillance and improved access to essential healthcare nationwide.

Preliminary findings from the 2026 Mini Demographic and Health Survey also indicate encouraging improvements in maternal and child healthcare, including antenatal services, skilled birth attendance, immunisation and child survival.

The minister further disclosed that more than 48,000 women have received free emergency obstetric care, while emergency medical services have provided life-saving treatment to over 130,000 Nigerians.

To strengthen disease preparedness, the Federal Government has also approved funding for all 36 states and the FCT to enhance readiness against potential Ebola outbreaks.

Prof. Pate reaffirmed the government's commitment to expanding access to affordable healthcare through sustained investments, stronger accountability and closer collaboration with state governments and development partners.
