The Honourable Commissioner, MINISTRY OF YOUTH AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, MR. OLUSEGUN DAWODU in lagos state, said in his keynote address
I am glad to address this gathering today being the year 2022 Disability Empowerment and Enhancement program; tagged: “Transformative Solutions for inclusive development: The Role of Innovation In Fueling Accessible And Equitable World", It is instructive to note that one of the policy direction of this present administration is to create a sustainable environment for everyone to thrive and live a meaningful life regardless of disability status.
From the inception, the Lagos state government has focused on policies and programmes tailored towards leaving no one behind. Inclusivity, you will agree with me, is pivotal to good governance and we will not rest on our oars until we have made a major difference in the welfare of Persons Living with Disabilities, PWDs in Lagos State.
Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in the past, several empowerment initiatives were set aside by our administration to assist persons with disabilities on different vocational training and Agricultural activities such as fishery, poultry, and farming, amongst others. Today, we are gathered for yet another edition of our periodic empowerment initiatives which is the distribution of empowerment and enhancement fund for PWDs. This Year's Disability Empowerment and Enhancement Programme will focus on the distribution of necessary assistive devices and issuance of grants to the various PWD clusters, Homes and PWD organizations in the State. Assistive devices have a central role in social policy as they reduce barriers between people with disabilities and their environments; they bring about freedom of movement and ease of access such that PWDs can live a fulfilled life without any hindrance.
Devices such as wheelchairs, Guide Canes, Hearing Aids, Motorized Wheelchairs, Cerebral Palsy chairs, Braille Embossers, Efudix creams and sunscreen lotion, used to treat conditions such as abnormal growths of the skin and simple skin cancers for the albinos will today be presented to different beneficiaries.
In addition, one thousand (1000) PWDs with entrepreneurial skills will also be getting financial assistance to help build the capacity of their businesses; while five hundred (500) vulnerable and five hundred (500) elderly Persons Living with Disabilities will also get empowered with the sum of One Hundred thousand naira (N100,000) each.
Ladies and gentlemen, this initiative is in line with our administration’s goal to make Lagos State an inclusive society that leaves no one behind regardless of age, status or disability. This, the Sanwo-Olu’s administration has demonstrated with the employment opportunities provided for some PWDs in our various Ministries, Departments and Agencies. It is our hope that these interventions would encourage people with disabilities to live a meaningful life while also contributing their quotas to the Society.
The incredible story of the cripple nothern boy, said he usually rent wheel chair for one thousand naira on a daily basis to move about but today he is happy because the general manager of LASODA Mr. Oluwadamilare Jamiu Ogundairo and The Honourable Commissioner, MINISTRY OF YOUTH AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, MR. OLUSEGUN DAWODU in lagos state gifted him a brand new wheel chair to move about and he his forver grateful for thier kind gesture
I therefore call on parents, neighbours and the society at large to stop the discrimination against people with disabilities. You will all agree with me that quite a number of PWDs are very active and resoaurceful in their areas of expertise, despite their disability status. Rather than discriminate against them, we should educate and encourage them properly to be the best version of themselves.
Let us join hands to create a favorable environment for PWDs by recognizing their talents and creativity while looking beyond their conditions to recognize their potentials. By giving them equal opportunities, we are helping them improve their confidence which provides the needed platform to contribute positively to themselves and the society at large.
