Flood hit Makurdi benue state
observed that the only access road linking three major communities in Makurdi was completely flooded, which prevented movement of vehicles. Parts of the public places buried in water along the major roads were Holy Trinity Specialist Hospital and Hotel Lucia. Also affected was the Living Faith Church on Naka Road, with several houses within the area completely buried in water.
The state Governor, Samuel Ortom, called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in the problem of flooding in the state, which he said had rendered many residents of Makurdi, the state capital, homeless. Ortom, who inspected the flooded areas on Wednesday, described the problem as overwhelming. He said the problem of flooding had risen at a time his administration was facing the challenge of paying salaries, calling on those living in flood prone areas across the state to relocate. He directed the State Emergency Management Agency to liaise with the National Emergency Management Agency for the purpose of assisting displaced persons.
The governor also directed that excavators should be used to create emergency water channels, pending Federal Government’s intervention. He specifically requested the Federal Government to consider the release of ecological funds to Benue State, maintaining that if urgent steps were not taken, the sad experience of 2012 might repeat itself.
