With the kidnap of over 200 young Chibok girls at the hand of terrorist group Boko Haram now spanning over four weeks, the campaign to bring these children back home has extended beyond Africa to the rest of the world. The unfortunate situation has touched millions around the world and highlighted a number of pertinent issues affecting children and women in Africa, and now 14 female African artists are lending their voices to the  #BringBackOurGirls  and female empowerment global campaigns by releasing a collaborative charity single titled "Sistas Unite".

Four girls out of the 168 students of Government Girls Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, that were abducted by Boko Haram in April, have escaped. The Chairman, Chibok Local Government Area, Mr. Bana Lawan, announced this on Tuesday in Abuja at a one-day stakeholders meeting for validation of draft humanitarian response plan for the abducted girls. The meeting was organised by the National Emergency Management Agency.

Nigeria's government is under pressure to do more to tackle the group and bring about the girls' release.

All three attacks happened on Thursday in remote parts of Borno state, the epicentre of Boko Haram's increasingly bloody struggle for an Islamic kingdom in religiously mixed Nigeria. One took place right next to Chibok, by the Cameroon border, from where more than 200 school girls were abducted last month.

That claim was supported by another senior commander from the Army’s 7th Division, the military formation created to deal with the insurgency in the Northeast. The 7th Division is headquartered in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Washington (AFP) - The United States on Wednesday condemned the "vicious" bombing of Nigeria's central city of Jos, and voiced confidence the Nigerian government could eventually rein in Boko Haram with help. Tuesday's twin bombings in Jos left at least 118 dead, and four other people were killed in a suicide car bombing in northern Kano.

A Nigerian government source and a former military attaché to Nigeria both confirmed the information, although they said details were sketchy owing to the secretive nature of Israeli-Nigerian military cooperation.

The United States has said that the Nigerian military is becoming afraid of engaging the Boko Haram insurgents. Testifying on Thursday before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the US Air Force Chief of staff, Gen. Mark Welsh III, said, “We’re now looking at a military force that is, quite frankly, becoming afraid to even engage. The United States doesn’t have the capacity, the capability to go rescue every kidnapped person around the world.” The  New York Times  reported that the US might choose to minimise its involvement in the search for the over 200 schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram due to doubts over Nigeria’s military capabilities. Saturday PUNCH  learnt that the US had questioned the ability of the Nigerian military to rescue the girls even with international help. The secret’s out. After months of speculation, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s wedding date and location have been revealed. The biggest wedding of the year will take place at the 16th-century Belvedere Fort in Florence, Italy, on May 24, a spokeswoman at the Florence mayor’s office told the AP. The couple rented the fort, located next to Florence’s famed Boboli Gardens, for $410,000 and a Protestant minister will preside over the ceremony. Belvedere Fort was built in 1590 and features panoramic views of Florence and the surrounding Tuscan hills. In an interview with Florence’s La Nazione newspaper published Friday, West shared his excitement about the big day. “[I'm] very happy,” he said. “I am a romantic: for Mother’s Day I gave Kim a wall of flowers. Family is everything for me, the antidote to the pressure of fame. Family and creativity relax me. I am happy to create for my family.”
